EDUCATOR IN ACTION: KAITLYN KOLILIS
Warm. Demanding. Comedian. Honestly, that combination tells you a LOT about what it’s like to be in Kaitlyn Kolilis’ classroom! With 15 years of teaching experience, Mrs. Kolilis teaches English 10, English 11, Study Skills, and Student Government in Room 210. She also works with Student Gov AND coaches track at NOJH. What a legend!
One of her biggest strengths as an educator is creating engagement and building relationships. Her teacher tip? Create inside jokes with your classes that you can reference all year long. It makes students feel included, connected, and like they’re part of something. And yes…according to her, “It HAS to be organic though.”
Her favorite part of teaching is helping students develop critical-thinking skills and watching young people begin to figure out who they are and where they’re headed. She says being part of their growth, learning, experiences, and stories is an incredible privilege—and a reminder that these students are our future.
And because we need the important information too:

She’s ALWAYS reading, especially thrillers.
She loves traveling and collecting experiences.

At Weber High, our teachers are voluntarily giving up their lunch time to sit down together, share ideas, ask questions, and have REAL conversations about how they can improve what happens in their classrooms.
We call them Learning Lunches—and they’re pretty incredible.
Led by our amazing Instructional Coaches, these teacher-driven discussions tackle specific topics, strategies, and challenges that directly impact student learning.
No requirement. No extra prep period. Just educators choosing to spend their own lunch learning from each other because they care THAT MUCH about getting better for our students.

THIS is one of those opportunities at Weber High that deserves some serious hype, and it happened yesterday!
Every fall, our sophomores AND juniors get the opportunity to take a full ACT practice test during the school day—for FREE. Then, in the spring of junior year, our juniors take the official ACT at school. Do the math: by the time a Weber student sits down for that official junior-year ACT, they’ve already had multiple school-day opportunities to experience the test format, timing, pacing, and types of questions they’ll encounter.
And that experience MATTERS.
ACT research shows that preparation and repeated testing can lead to score gains. Students who retest often improve, and ACT specifically points to increased familiarity, confidence, and understanding of the test as factors associated with better performance. Their research also shows continued gains across multiple attempts.
The evidence suppots something we’re already giving our Warriors: practice, repetition, familiarity, feedback, and multiple opportunities to improve. ACT even recommends full-length practice tests as a central part of preparation.
That means when our juniors walk into the real ACT, we don’t want it to feel brand new. They’ve been here before. They know the drill. And they’re READY.
Providing these opportunities during the school day and at no cost to students removes barriers and gives ALL of our Warriors a chance to prepare—not just the students who have access to outside test prep.
That’s preparation with a purpose.
That’s creating opportunity.
But what about the seniors? While our underclassmen were busy practice testing, our seniors had the opportunity to hear from universities all across the state. Representatives from all over Utah came and spoke to our seniors about their programs in an assembly style setting, and then met with individual kids to answer questions and help them enroll. We could have given our seniors a day off, but instead we wanted to give them opportunities.
At Weber, we try and empower all our students with every opportunity.
That’s the Warrior advantage.

FROM WARRIORS TO LITTLE LEARNERS!
Last week, Mrs. Ward’s Ag Communications class took learning outside the walls of Weber High and headed to Bates Elementary and West Weber Elementary to hang out with some pretty awesome 3rd graders!
The lesson of the day? MAPLE SYRUP!
Our Warriors got to step into the role of teachers as they taught the students all about maple syrup and how it’s made—sharing what they’ve learned while getting some real-world communication experience along the way. THIS is the kind of learning we love to see: students teaching students, classrooms connecting with our community, and Warriors putting their skills into ACTION.
Huge shoutout to Mrs. Ward and her Ag Communications students for representing Weber High so well—and to the Bates an West Weber 3rd graders for being such great students!
Learning is pretty SWEET when maple syrup is involved.
Our heroes at Weber carry keys, mops, and somehow know how to fix EVERYTHING.
Today we’re giving a HUGE shoutout to the incredible custodians who keep Weber High running behind the scenes every single day.
They’re here early. They stay late. They clean up messes they definitely did not make. And they work tirelessly to make sure our school is clean, safe, and ready for thousands of Warriors each day.
Weber High simply wouldn’t be Weber High without them.

Meet another Educator in Action!
Today’s Admin in Action spotlight is Stacie Palmer—and she brings a pretty incredible perspective to the front office.
Before becoming an administrator, Stacie spent 13 years teaching math, general financial literacy, and integrated science. Now in her second year as an administrator, she’s still focused on what matters most: helping students and families succeed.
Her favorite part of the job? Helping create generational change for students and their families. THAT is what education is all about.
Stacie describes herself as direct, empathetic, and solution-oriented—which sounds like a pretty great combination when you’re helping run a high school!
A few things you might not know:
She loves exploring the outdoors with her family.
She says she’s low maintenance enough to happily live in a van.
With her kids getting older, she’s ready for a new chapter traveling the world with her husband.
And if she had to teach something besides math? Absolutely NOTHING. In her words, “Math is the best!”
We’re grateful to have Stacie working behind the scenes, solving problems, supporting students, and helping make Weber High better every day.

Cambree Douglass is a student who is also an aspiring educator here at Weber High, and in our Educators Rising club! Cambree is currently in our Education Pathway program, where she is enrolled in ED 1010. She decided to meet with Dr. Kachold and pick his brain about why he chose to go into education. His response? "I didn't want to be a lawyer. I got into administration to help teachers."

AP Results celebration! Mrs. Phinney, Mr. O, and Mrs. Nielson got recognized because their students excelled in their AP courses and on AP exams last year. Weber High had a record number of exams taken and passed last year. The best AP scores our school has had in at least 15 years. These three are awesome, and our students are CRUSHING it!

When teachers catch students demonstrating exceptional behavior in one of these areas, they can award them an AIR Card. Students then bring their card to the office and get a prize—because doing the right thing deserves to be noticed!
